      <image:title>About Cancer - What is cancer?</image:title>
      <image:caption>Cancer is a type of illness where some of the body’s cells grow too quickly.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6144c7855c2dd871452a1010/130ea95a-ac80-4d62-956c-e699484cad45/cells.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>About Cancer - What are cells?</image:title>
      <image:caption>Our bodies are made up of billions of cells. They are tiny and can only be seen with a microscope. Cells are grouped together to make up parts of our bodies, such as skin, brain and muscle. Cells in different parts of the body have different jobs, for example, a cell in the eye helps us see, and a cell in the heart helps pump blood around our body.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6144c7855c2dd871452a1010/8b2a3c62-8594-4a84-a6c3-2bd878aef3d6/normal-cell-division.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>About Cancer - Cells make copies of themselves</image:title>
      <image:caption>Our bodies can grow and repair themselves because cells can make copies of themselves. One cell become two cells, two cells become four cells, then 8 and so on.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6144c7855c2dd871452a1010/e223a562-661b-4b43-b1f0-3f10de270b57/Cell-nucleus-DNA.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>About Cancer - Cells have instructions inside</image:title>
      <image:caption>Each cell has something called a nucleus inside which contains DNA. DNA is basically a load of instructions that tell the cell what to do.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6144c7855c2dd871452a1010/3f850dea-d4a0-4e91-9a92-7e420e2f2b77/Cancer-cells.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>About Cancer - What are cancer cells?</image:title>
      <image:caption>Sometimes these instructions can become damaged or get lost and the cell starts to misbehave and not listen to the body. They can make too many copies of themselves and don’t stop when the body tells them to. These cells are cancer cells. Cancer cells carry on making copies of themselves until they form a lump called a tumour. Cancer cells do not like sticking together with their neighbouring cells so can float off around the body to find another place to settle and start to make more copies of themselves. There are over 200 different types of cancer because there are over 200 different types of cells in our body, and cancer happens when a cell starts to misbehave.</image:caption>

      <image:title>How your child may react - Younger children’s reactions</image:title>
      <image:caption>Express grief in small “pockets” often physically or behaviourally and then go on about their play Regress back to younger behaviours (like bed wetting, sucking their thumb) Act as if nothing is happening and use denial as coping Look “okay” on outside, but have a lot going on inside Worry about who will take care of them and about the other parent’s health Escalate certain fears into phobias Show aggressive play or withdrawn behaviour Experience separation anxiety Perform role plays about being dead or going to a funeral (they do not have adult inhibitions surrounding death) and find this type of play, whilst upsetting for you, a way of making sense of what is happening These reactions are the most common, but every child is different</image:caption>

      <image:caption>React more like adults, and are shocked by what you have to say Look “okay” on outside, but have a lot of strong feelings on the inside Not want to be seen as different at school Easily display irritability and anger, become unusually aggressive, unnaturally quiet or withdrawn Create defence strategies, for example become the class clown, or bully Regress behaviourally and with school performance Become fearful and insecure as they have an increasing awareness of their own mortality Try to be extra good so that you don’t see their worry and sadness These reactions are the most common, but every child is different</image:caption>

      <image:title>How your child may react - Teenager’s Reactions</image:title>
      <image:caption>Struggle for independence and get annoyed by adults telling them how they should be feeling or behaving Feel self-conscious and not sure of how to handle emotions in public, and within themselves Have increase anxieties about the future, and may question the meaning of life Cope by taking part in risk-taking behaviour Express anger, often compounded by a sense of injustice Become withdrawn and difficult to engage with May feel embarrassed telling their friends about what is happening These reactions are the most common, but every child is different</image:caption>

      <image:caption>When life feels strange, and everything is different because your parent is sick, it can be very hard to keep calm. Sometimes even the tiniest thing creates an explosion inside you. Those explosions can be scary. It’s good to have a few ways to calm down after inner explosions. Here are seven different ways to try:</image:caption>

      <image:title>Activity_Memory Box</image:title>
      <image:caption>Memory Box All you need is a box which you might like to decorate. Fill your memory box with items that remind you of your parent, and the times you spent together. Remember to get permission before you take an object. Here are some examples: Jewellery, watches, scarfs, wallets, photographs, letters, lipstick, holiday postcards, favourite DVD, glasses, passport, aftershave bottles. Try to fill your box with objects that have a story or a memory attached to it. You could write a note for each item you put in describing why that item is important to you. It can be a nice idea to keep the memory boxes going for years and years by adding things you might have wanted to share with your Mum or Dad, like an achievement certificate, or a piece of writing or drawing. In the future you might like to share your memory box with family and friends. It can be really nice to share each other’s memories and talk about how they make feel.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Activity_Scrapbook</image:title>
      <image:caption>Scrap Book Make a scrap book about you and your parent, or your whole family. You could include photos, their favourite crisp packet, train tickets, old birthday cards - anything that reminds you of them. You can write why the items stuck in are meaningful, or little stories connected with each item. You can get your parent to write in it too. Or you could just fill it up with special photos of you and your parent together. Start by getting a big pad of paper and writing down anything like ‘my favourite film’, ‘my favourite book’. All the family members get to write things and slowly the book begins to fill up with stuff all about your family. It captures the family in that moment of time. You can leave the pad in a place where anyone can add things, at any time.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Activity_making art</image:title>
      <image:caption>Making Art Making art together can be simple, fun and creates something you can keep. You could do paint handprints with all the family members. Remember to all sign your names and write the date, like ‘proper’ artists do. You could create drawings about fun times you have had together, make them dot-to-dot pictures or even just do colouring in together. If you can get hold of some moulding clay (the air dry ones are the best) you could create a sculpture together. Another idea is a kiss from Mummy or Daddy. Put lipstick on and kiss a piece of card. You could take this to school and ask if a teacher can laminate it for you. Look at the family flag motto, and mobile making activities for other ideas.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Near The End | How they might respond - Near the end</image:title>
      <image:caption>How they might respond After initial conversations with children about the seriousness of their parent’s illness, there is often a sense of grief. This is sometimes called pre-bereavement. Pre-bereavement grief is complex as feelings of hope and optimism can be still felt. Gradually over time these feelings are changed into acceptance. Children begin to accept their parent is going to die. Children grieve differently from adults. They dip into small ‘pockets’ of grief, whereas adults grieve over long periods of time.</image:caption>
